May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favour

I finally had the chance to watch The Hunger Games tonight with my sister. I had never read the book so wasn't sure what to expect but I believe the movie definitely lived up to its hype. Jennifer Lawrence was brilliant  in playing Katniss Everdeen (she was Mystique in X-Men First Class as well) not to mention, Josh Hutcherson's portrayal of Peeta Mellark (did you know he was only 19?!) was exceptional as well. Since I never read the book, there were times where I felt that there was something "missing" in terms of the story line but that's expected when Hollywood adapts a screenplay from a novel. *SPOILER ALERT BELOW*

My favourite scenes from the movie were when Katniss volunteers as tribute for her sister, Primrose and when she and Peeta were in the tribute parade and their outfits were lit on fire. I identified so strongly with that first scene when Katniss, without a moment's hesitation, volunteered to take her sister's place mainly because my sister is around Prim's age and like her, I would have done whatever it took to protect my sister. I LOVED the "fire dress" scene simply because it was so different than the other costumes that the other tributes were wearing and come on, riding in a chariot while your suit is on fire and looking so calm and suave about it? - you have to admit that that is kind of badass.

The one scene that drove me to tears was when Rue died. Again, I never read the book but from the looks of it, Rue couldn't have been more than 10-11 and just seeing a young child die with such violence made me lose it. I guess now I understand why many parents were upset that the ratings for the movie was only a mere PG and not higher considering the violent content of the film, especially for younger children.

Overall, I liked the movie. Enough so to make me now want to read the trilogy. Hmmm...reading material for my trip to Montreal this week?

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the title of the post is a quote from the movie though I do think that this is quite fitting for us premeds anxiously waiting for the big decision in 2 weeks as well. May the odds be ever in our favour.
